Abstract

The study examined the double mediating effect of distress tolerance and self-soothing ability in the relation between covert narcissism and relationship addiction. A total of 419 adults, was recruited from an online research company. The Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results were as follows: First, there were significant correlations between all study variables. Second, distress tolerance and self-soothing ability had a partial-mediation effect in the link between covert narcissism and relationship addiction respectively. Third, distress tolerance and self-soothing ability had a sequential duel-mediation effect in the link between covert narcissism and relationship addiction. These findings indicated that covert narcissism was an important factor that directly effects relationship addiction, and that high covert narcissism had a significant effect on lower levels of self-soothing ability through lower distress tolerance, which in turn resulted in higher levels of relationship addiction. The implications and limitations of the study are discussed.
